Sharmin Prince
A passionate advocate for gender equality and social justice. My journey began in Guyana, where I witnessed the prevalence of gender-based violence and the deeply ingrained gender inequalities that plagued my community. Inspired by the remarkable women who defied societal norms and became leaders in their own right, I became driven to make a difference.
My path to advocacy took an unexpected turn when I joined the US Army at the age of 33. Though my time in service was not counted accurately, it was during this period that I experienced the first-hand effects of ageism and discrimination. This experience compelled me to become an advocate for both myself and others, as I discovered my own strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
Motivated by my personal journey, I embarked on a quest to empower women who were trapped in cycles of inequality and violence. I pursued academic achievements, including a Diploma in Social Work, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL). Alongside my studies, I immersed myself in research and advocacy work, aiming to dismantle the deep-rooted structures of gender inequality.
To further enhance my ability to support victims and survivors of gender-based violence, I obtained certifications in Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) and Trauma Professional. These certifications equipped me with crucial skills in trauma recovery. Additionally, I am currently completing a certificate in Gender Equality from the University of Pretoria through the Digital Frontiers Institute, which will enable me to provide training and tools for addressing gender disparities.
Throughout my journey, I have experienced both triumphs and challenges. I have witnessed the transformative power of education and awareness in changing mindsets and breaking the chains of gender inequality. But I have also encountered resistance from those who resist change. Nevertheless, I remain steadfast in my mission to create a more equitable and just society.
With this vision in mind, I founded Eagles Empowered to Soar, INC., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization registered in the United States of America and Guyana. Through this organization, I collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations to create safe spaces, foster dialogue, and promote gender equity through education, legislation, and community engagement.
Having dedicated a significant portion of my life to serving the homeless sector in New York for over 20 years, my commitment extends to assisting victims of domestic violence, veterans, individuals struggling with substance abuse, those living with HIV/AIDS, and others in need. As a Mentor and a manager of Eagles Empowered to Soar, INC., I continue to make a positive impact in various capacities.
By sharing my story and experiences, my aim is to inspire others to challenge the status quo and join me in the fight for gender equality. Through my words, actions, and unwavering dedication, I hope to leave a lasting legacy that inspires future generations to strive for a world where gender equality is not just a dream but a reality.
Join me on this empowering journey, and together, let us create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
